CEFIXIME AND LACTOBACILLUS COMBINATION

INTRODUCTION:

Cefixime and Lactobacillus combination is developed to reduce the gastrointestinal side effects of cefixime.

CEFIXIME:

Cefixime is a third generation Cephalosporin, bactericidal in action.

Mechanism Of Action:

Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall. Cefixime binds with high affinity to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall, thus interfering with peptidoglycan synthesis.

Hence causing bacterial cell death.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects:

Diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, and vomiting are among the commonly observed GI side effects.

Several cases of documented pseudomembranous colitis were identified during the studies.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus:

Lactobacillus Acidophilus is a Probiotic.

The recent emphasis on supplementation with lactobacilli is largely attributed to information obtained regarding the beneficial effects of lactobacilli in preventing or minimizing the severity of antibiotic associated diarrhoeal episodes.

The combination of Lactobacillus with the Cefixime provides the most powerful third generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic made safer by intestinal  Friendly action of Lactobacillus.

Advantages:

  • Cefixime is the most potent 3rd generation oral cephalosporin and Lactobacillus improves safety profile of cefixime
  • Lactobacillus prevents overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria and maintains the essential bacteria.
  • Lactobacillus improves patient compliance for cefixime , hence ensures completion of treatment.
